Issues in transdermal formulation development and solutions using MedRx’s proprietary ionic liquids to address these issues
Transdermal formulation
Active ingredients are absorbed through the subcutaneous blood vessels and pass through the bloodstream, providing systemic effects same as oral formulations.
Transdermal formulation can maintain a constant level of the active ingredient in the blood.
Since active ingredients circulate throughout the body without passing through the digestive system or liver, it is possible to avoid the metabolic effects caused by the liver first-pass effect, which can be an issue with oral formulations, and there is less burden on the stomach and intestines.
If adverse effects occur, the transdermal formulation can be removed and administration can be stopped immediately.
Challenges in transdermal formulation development
The active ingredient itself must have appropriate physical properties such as solubility and skin permeability.
Skin permeability and solubility may be improved by using surfactants and/or solvents, etc., but these may also cause skin irritation, so conventional techniques have limitations.
